English and Math Skills Assessment
Preparing students for academic success
Proficiency in mathematics and English are critical components in achieving academic success in any
Strayer University program. To support academic progress and to help place students into the correct level of courses the
University has adopted a policy requiring pre-registration assessment of fundamental English and math skills.
Students may demonstrate fundamental English and math proficiencies by providing documentation of college-level transfer credit in English and/or math, demonstrating prior completion of a university degree program (associates or bachelors), or by providing SAT / ACT scores above certain thresholds. Please contact your Campus Admissions or Academics representative for more information. For those students who cannot demonstrate fundamental English and math proficiencies through one of those means, Strayer offers the option of taking an interactive placement exam known as Accuplacer, produced by the College Board. Students taking the Accuplacer usually do so as part of the admissions process prior to registering for classes in their first quarter. The results of the placement assessment determine whether the student is required to complete English 090 and/or Math 090 as part of their curriculum. If English 090 and/or Math 090 are required, they must be completed within the first two quarters. Accuplacer Test Content and Process
English Placement Test
The English placement test covers the area of sentence skills. This test measures understanding of English sentence
structure and punctuation.
Math Placement Test
The math placement test covers the area of arithmetic. It measures the ability to perform basic arithmetic operations
and to solve problems that involve fundamental arithmetic concepts.
Both tests are given at no cost to students and can be administered on campus in the LRC or remotely online through proctored sessions. The tests are not timed, and each test contains 17 - 22 questions. On average, most people complete both tests within ½ - 1 hour. Your admissions representative will coordinate testing logistics with you.
Test Preparation
Though taking the Accuplacer does not require any specific preparation, the following resources are provided to help
you know what to expect, and may serve to refresh your memory of fundamental English and math concepts. It is recommended that students
review this information prior to taking the Accuplacer assessment.
